National Sports Day

The nation observes ‘National Sports Day’ every year on 29th of August. This day marks the birth anniversary of popular hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. His contribution in the field of hockey remains undefeated. It was owing to his continuous efforts that India could make it to the 1928 Olympics for the first time. He lived up to his dream with 14 goals in 5 matches and directed the country towards achieving its debut gold medal in hockey. He was awarded with ‘Padma-Bhushan’- the 3rd highest civilian honor in India. He is the only player to have a commemorative postage stamp and a First-Day-Cover in his honour.

National Sports Day 2023 celebrations:

This year the nation is planning to celebrate National Sports Day in a grand manner. For this purpose, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and Fit India Mission have asked the Schools/ Colleges/Ministries/Government and Private Organizations to participate in the mission by involving in sports or fitness activity for a minimum of 1 hour,  in any day between 21st August to 29th August, 2023.

Sports/Fitness Activities to be undertaken:

The category of activities to be observed on National Sports Day is as follows:

  1. Outdoor activity: Football, Running, Kho-kho, Tennis, Hockey.
  2. Indoor activity: Badminton, Volleyball, Handball, Basketball, Table-tennis.
  3. Fun Activity: Sack race, lemon race, rope skipping, aerobics, squat challenge.

Theme :

The set theme for National Sports Day, 2023 is “Sports as an enabler for an inclusive and fit society.”

How to participate in National Sports Day?

For participation in the event, the schools/colleges/Ministries/Govt & Private Organisations need to register on Fit India website and provide all necessary details. On the day of the event, the schools/colleges/Ministries/Govt & Private Organisations need to upload photos/video links from the event to download e-certificate. National Sports Day Assam 2023:

The State of Assam has taken the initiative of observing national sports day with an exception. This year the state will celebrate the day with an indigenous fervor. The Government of Assam has laid the theme of event at regional level as “Amar Khel Amar Porompora (আমাৰ খেল, আমাৰ পৰম্পৰা): Celebrating National Sports Day with an Indigenous Fervor.” The primary aim of this twist in the event is to promote indigenous sports heritage of Assam and spreading the message of inculcating Sports as a tool of overall growth.

Level of events to be organized in Assam:

The event will be observed on a two-tier level:

  1. District level: Yoga sessions are to be conducted across all districts in Assam.
  2. State level: Competitions in indigenous games are to be held.

Indigenous games to be played and demonstrated:

The following indigenous games are to be played-

a) Slingshot- (ketepa) কেটেপা

b) Indian archery

c) Duck catching

d) Rapid chess

e)Dhop khel ধোপ খেল

Indigenous games to be demonstrated:

  1. Tug of war (ৰচীটনা)
  2. Peng (পেং)
  3. Latum (লাটুম)
  4. Ghila ( ঘিলা)
  5. Thangta (থাং তা)
  6. Cock fight (কুকুৰাৰ যুঁজ)
  7. Slow cycle race
  8. Rimin Nalaiba (Dimasa rod pushing game) (ৰিমিন নলাইবা)
  9. Takeli bhonga (টেকেলি ভঙা)
  10. Hambi Kapathu (Karbi ghila) (হাম্বি কপাথু)
  11. Khomlainai (Bodo wrestling) (খোমলাইনাই)
  12. Along dolong (‘অলং ড’লং’)

An exhibition will also be organized on the occasion displaying rare photographs related to traditional sports and games of different communities of Assam.

The event will take place on 29th august, 2023 at Nehru stadium, Guwahati, Assam.

Celebrations across the State for National Sports Day:

  • Assam Government organised a state-level cycle rally as well as a mass morning walk in Guwahati in line with the objectives of ‘Fit India’ campaign. Indigenous sports activities have been played from 9am to 1pm at Nehru Stadium, Guwahati.
  • The Cachar district administration of Assam organised ‘Cyclothon 3.0, 2023 on 27th August from 6am to 8am in collaboration with All India Marwari Yuva Manch as a mark of celebration of National Sports Day this year.
  • Students of Cotton University, Students Union have organised a cycle rally followed by two quiz competitions at school level and open forum quiz and an Intra University Badminton Competition. They have also organised a felicitation program for unnoticed heroes in sports world.
